Fall Internship

Full time, San Francisco

Upwell will be holding a 6-week internship program this fall. The program will focus on introducing interns to the glorious worlds of big listening, social media analysis, online campaigns, and the OCEAN! This is an opportunity to get involved with our nonprofit startup at the ground level. You will help us develop innovative ways to listen to online conversations about the oceans. You will help drive attention to captivating, science-based ocean content. You will meet some of the biggest changemakers in ocean conservation, as we weave a network and build the capacity of the oceans sector.

Note: This internship is exclusively for current graduate or undergraduate students, or recent graduates.  Early career candidates are encouraged to apply to our fellowship.

The interns will be a team, working together and overseen by Upwell’s senior staff. This team will be responsible for research tasks, campaign support, administrative assistance, and other duties as assigned.  You will both collaborate with each other and work on your own.

Requirements

As mentioned, this internship is exclusively for current or just-graduated students.

Communication and writing skills are a must, and comfort working in a team is essential.  Your research skills should be top notch, whether it’s digging up good scientific data to bolster a campaign, or finding the top internet influencers on a topic like food, sharks or robots. We’re also looking for interns who want to flex their creative muscle to think of innovative ways to engage people in online conversations about the ocean.

This position requires independence, initiative, and self-direction. You will often work on your own to complete an assigned task, and we will rely on you to be resourceful, enterprising, and creative.

Familiarity with social media is a must. You should have an interest in learning more about attention analytics and using social tools to increase attention to issues.  A love for the ocean is a plus.

You will need your own laptop and need to be present in our office in North Beach in San Francisco throughout the duration of the internship.  If a laptop is a barrier to your participation, apply anyway and, if you are selected, we’ll work something out. Normal working hours are 9 – 5, Monday to Friday.

Compensation

Interns will receive class credit.  We have a nominal stipend available for a recent graduate.

Application
